Campbell (NYSE: CPB  ) soup is good ... baby food. Or it soon will be.

On Thursday after close of market, Campbell Soup announced that it has agreed to acquire organic baby food manufacturer Plum Organics, the country's No. 2 brand of organic baby food, and the No. 4 baby food brand in America -- organic or otherwise.

Top Plum products include organic baby food sold in squeezable pouches, and "Plum Kids Mashups" squeezable fruit, vegetable, and Greek yogurt pouches, and also "Super Puffs" puffed snacks, and "Plum Mighty Four" snack pouches for toddlers.

Campbell did not disclose what price it will pay to acquire Plum, but price may not be an object here. Campbell grew profits at less than 6% over the past five years, and is expecting to grow a little faster than that over the next five. Therefore, the company was undoubtedly attracted more by the fact that organic baby food as a food category is growing sales 43% annually, and is already a $2 billion annual business in the U.S., than by a cheap price tag on the company.

    On Monday, storage solution company Western Digital Corp (WDC) announced that it has agreed to acquire Virident Systems, Inc. for $685 million.

    The flash storage solutions company will be purchased by HGST, which is a subsidiary of WDC, for a total of $685 million in cash. This amount represents approximately $645 million in enterprise value.

    This deal will allow WDC to expand its presence in the solid state drives market. This market is expected to grow from $2.5 billion in revenue in 2012 to $7 billion in revenue by 2017.

    Mike Cordano, president of Western Digital unit HGST commented: “Virident’s server-side flash storage helps datacenter customers solve their most significant data infrastructure challenges, including application performance across diverse workloads, power efficiency, and total cost of ownership.”

    Western Digital shares were up 37 cents, or 0.57%, during pre-market trading Monday. The stock is up 53% YTD.

The company is losing market share to rival Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC  ) , and its financial performance is also on the decline.     Hard-disk maker Western Digital (WDC) is another name that enjoyed market-crushing momentum last year, dishing out 94% gains to investors who bet on the computer storage stock this time last year. The computer storage business still has some enormous tailwinds pushing at its back right now, and those should continue to propel the world's biggest hard drive maker to new highs in the year ahead.

    Worldwide, demand for storage is increasing like never before. That's because, today, consumers carry around devices that record HD video and photos, store data-intensive applications, and store it all in the cloud. That means that storage is critical both on consumers' local PCs and on the server farms that continue to sprout up.

    For conventional hard drive makers, solid state drives represent the future. For now, their costs are keeping SSDs from all but the most performance-demanding tasks, but eventually it's likely they'll supplant HDDs as the standard storage medium. While that's been a threat to firms like WDC, recent acquisitions like STEC should help to boost Western Digital's SSD capabilities.

    Western Digital currently has a solid cash position: around $2.5 billion net of debt as of the most recent quarter. And that number is likely to be closer to $3 billion by the time next quarter rolls around. That's enough dry powder to pay for around 12.5% of WDC's current market capitalization right now, a fact that helps reduce the risk in shares after such a big run higher.

    If WDC can continue to use cash in a smart way, investors stand to keep benefiting.
