Best High Tech Companies To Invest In Right Now

Getty Images With Veterans Day approaching, it makes sense that charities dedicated to helping veterans and their families are ramping up their efforts. That's not lost on crooks, who also will ramp up their efforts. So, if you want to support those who have risked their lives for this country rather than enrich a bunch of crooks who are likely halfway around the world, heed the warning issued on Friday by the Better Business Bureau. Watch out for pitches from supposed charities that want you to think they care about U.S. military veterans. The solicitations can come by mail, email, social media, or door-to-door, the BBB said. Groups that say they're helping veterans and those they are helping them are two different things. So, the key is being able to recognize the scams as well as verify that where you intend to send your money is the real deal. How to Avoid Being Duped

Advisors' Opinion:

With the stock down more than 13% since early March, it would be easy to assume Multimedia Games Holding Company (MGAM) was headed for a nasty earnings report at the end of April. The market was wrong, however. MGAM posted a 25% increase in revenue for the quarter, and a 28% improvement in earnings … and that was before the acquisition of PokerTek (PTEK). Bringing PokertTek into the fold will almost assure a fourth straight year of revenue and income growth.

Look at Hi-Tech Pharmacal (HITK) cash flow statement below. Hi-Tech just received approval by the FDA for an oral concentrate of Lorazepam. Lorazepam is an often-used drug for the treatment of anxiety and is probably used by more Wall Street analysts than I care to know about. Note that the last three years indicate that net income is greater than operating cash flow. This is known as a red flag and should be investigated thoroughly if you intend to invest in any stock with similar numbers.

Once upon a time, I was also an OmniVision (NASDAQ: OVTI  ) bull, thinking the image sensor specialist's lead in backside-illuminated technology gave it a substantial leg up against the competition. When OmniVision lost the iPhone 4S primary camera spot to Sony, that was just the first sign that things may never be the same. The company subsequently lost the iPhone 5 primary sensor, also to Sony. HTC has gone with STMicroelectronicsfor the "UltraPixel" sensor in its One flagship (OmniVision sources the secondary sensor), which lends to the idea that BSI sensors are becoming commoditized. Goodbye, pricing power. I gave up on OmniVision long ago.

Best Defensive Companies To Buy For 2014

LONDON -- Successful investors use a disciplined approach to picking stocks, and checklists can be a great way to make sure you've covered all the bases.

In this series, I am subjecting companies to scrutiny under the following five headings: prospects, performance, management, safety, and valuation. How doesUnilever (LSE: ULVR  ) (NYSE: UL  ) measure up?

1.Prospects
The consumer staples sector is defensive. Nevertheless, in Western markets, sales are under pressure from weak economic growth, so firms must continue to invest heavily in brands to maintain market share. Emerging markets are experiencing rapid growth, as vast populations with increasing disposable wealth are attracted to branded goods.

As the world's third-largest consumer staples firms, Unilever has market power with suppliers and buyers and the scale to invest heavily in marketing. In emerging markets, it enjoys the advantage of having moved in early.

Emerging markets currently account for 57% of sales, and at around 10% p.a. are growing at twice the rate of total sales. A broad spread of earnings from Europe, the Americas, and Asia Pacific adds to Unilever's robustness.

Our first example looks at Vectren Corp. historical earnings, a utility with a 15-year historical earnings growth rate that is below our 3% threshold established in Part 1. Note that fair valuation is calculated using Graham Dodd Formula (GDF) deriving a fair value PE of 13.8 (slightly below, but close to our PE 15 standard). However, a normal PE of 16 has been historically applied by Mr. Market. Therefore, valuation falls between a PE of 13.8 to 16, or well within a range of normalcy.

So what: First quarter sales totaled $63.3 million, which turned into a non-GAAP net loss of $0.02 per share. Performance Technologies shares jumped 24% to $3.70 premarket, just under the offer price.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One networking player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Sonus Networks (SONS), which provides networked solutions for communications service providers and enterprises in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up 104%.

If you take a look at the chart for Sonus Networks, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways for the past month, with shares moving between $3.25 on the downside and $3.72 on the upside. Shares of SONS have been finding support over the last month each time the stock has pulled back to its 50-day moving average. This stock is now starting to trend a bit higher and move within range of triggering a breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways consolidating chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SONS if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $3.56 to $3.59 a share and then once it takes out its 52-week high at $3.72 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.50 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then SONS will set up to enter new 52-week high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $5 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy SONS off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $3.33 to $3.25 a share, or right below more support at $3.10 a share. One could also buy SONS off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Another under-$10 stock that looks poised for a sharp move higher is Dolan (DM), a provider of necessary business information and professional services to the legal, financial and real estate sectors in the U.S. This stock has been hammered by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off huge by 80%.

If you take a look at the chart for Dolan Company, you'll notice that this stock has been downtrending badly over the last two months, with shares plunging lower from its high of $3 a share to its recent low of 66 cents per share. During that downtrend, shares of DM have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of DM into oversold territory, since its current relative strength index reading is 20. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can make a powerful bounce higher from.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in DM if it manages to break out above Thursday's high of 77 cents per share and then above some more near-term overhead resistance at 80 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 321,823 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then DM will set up for a possible powerful bounce higher that could easily take this stock back above $1 to $1.20 a share.

Traders can look to buy DM off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right around some key near-term support levels at 71 cents to 66 cents per share. One can also buy DM off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rural areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

Murray Close, Warner Bros./AP From a major banking institution kicking off the new earnings season to the most-anticipated theme park debut of the year staging its grand opening, here are some things that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Food for Thought The market's going to get off to a slow start on the news front. That's not a surprise given that it was closed Friday for Independence Day. One company that will be in the news on Monday is food and industrial products maker Penford (PENX). Penford's wide range of products include food ingredients, pet and animal products, sustainable bioproducts, starches for paper and packaging products and biofuels. Analysts see Penford earning 21 cents a share, but keep in mind that it has come up short against Wall Street expectations in each of the three previous quarters. Tuesday -- Harry Potter Central Florida will be a bit busier than usual on Tuesday when Comcast's (CMCSK) Universal Orlando has its grand opening of the new Diagon Alley expansion to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It's been a rough start. July 8 wasn't the opening date that the park originally wanted, judging by the fact that it had "The Tonight Show" and "Today" run weeklong tie-ins a few weeks ago. Conveniently for Comcast, it owns both the Universal theme parks and NBC. However, with the expansion's indoor coaster proving unreliable -- and even Universal pass holders being denied early access to attractions outside of the new Hogwarts Express train ride -- it could be an interesting debut. The crowds should be huge, the expectations lofty. Wednesday -- Mopping Up WD-40 (WDFC) reports on Wednesday afternoon. This is the company behind the multi-use lubricant. It also offers industrial cleaners, toilet sanitizers and other compounds. WD-40 didn't work out for its shareholders last time out. It posted better than expected 9 percent growth in revenue, but earnings fell just short of expectations. WD-4

Using this simple thesis not only makes the whole idea of LNG exports rather simple, it doesn't need to drastically change the way you think about the energy space already. For those who are a little more tolerant of risk, natural gas producers should look a bit more attractive. Low-cost producers like Ultra Petroleum (NYSE: UPL  ) and Exco Resources (NYSE: XCO  ) beat analyst expectations this past quarter because the small uptick in gas prices gave them enough room to profit. If we were to see an uptick in demand thanks to natural gas, then these companies could stand to profit greatly.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Benjamin Shepherd] The US health care industry is among the heaviest regulated in the nation. Most health care-related companies must answer to federal, state and, in many cases, local regulators.

That regulatory burden will only grow more complex, as myriad new rules under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” come into effect over the next few months. In just 22 days, the first insurance exchanges are supposed to come online. On January 1, the individual mandate and changes in coverage standards become effective.

Many health care businesses and organizations were dragging their feet in complying with Obamacare’s provisions, waiting to see how the Supreme Court would come down on the law. The court didn’t rule on Obamacare until June 2012, a decision in which it upheld the law almost in its entirety.

Given that delayed decision, a study conducted by the Government Accountability Office this past June found that only 44 percent of key activities required for full compliance had been completed, particularly where health insurance exchanges were concerned.

As a result, there’s a massive scramble underway to achieve minimum compliance levels with the law. But there’s a paucity of workers with the requisite knowledge of federal and insurance regulations required to help companies and state governments navigate the labyrinth of regulations.

That’s creating a lot of work for consultancies such as Huron Consulting Group (NSDQ: HURN), which focuses almost exclusively on the health care sector.

While the company also works in the legal, financial, education and life sciences arenas, it primarily helps hospitals, health systems and physician groups reduce costs, maximize reimbursements from both federal and private insurers and transition towards the value-based care mandated under Obamacare. In future years, reimbursements will transition towards rewarding health care organizations tha

Investing In The Global Diabetes Epidemic

Top Up And Coming Companies To Buy Right Now

Print FriendlyThere is a “silent epidemic” among us. It’s insidious and devastating. And it’s raging across both the US and the world. The epidemic is diabetes.

Diabetes has a terrible impact on the human body. According to doctors, it can lead to heart disease, cancer, stroke, kidney failure, foot amputations, and blindness. Preventing and mitigating the effects of this disease should be a top priority for everyone.

Below are three speculative plays on this terrible phenomenon. Although only suitable for aggressive investors, each stock could pay off with outsized returns.

At first the symptoms of diabetes are subtle; you can be at risk and not even know it. The American Diabetes Association says 8.3 percent of Americans have the disease and an additional 25 percent are prediabetic, meaning they run a good chance of developing the full-blown disease. Obesity is closely related to diabetes and the rates of both are rising rapidly.

Blood sugar is at the heart of diabetes. When you eat (or drink) carbohydrates—sweets, bread, potatoes, processed foods, etc.—blood sugar levels rise. Nothing particularly wrong there; it’s how your body gets energy.

Normally, after eating, insulin does a wonderful job at keeping blood sugar levels close to the “good” range. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not make or use insulin properly and blood sugar levels careen out of control, wreaking havoc on the body.

Prevention and Treatment

Prevention is the only real cure for Type 2 diabetes (95 percent of cases). Once the disease develops, you can’t cure it, only control it. Today’s type 2 diabetes epidemic is almost certainly caused by the rapid shift, across the world, into eating processed foods t! hat are high in sugar and fat and low in fiber. The disease has a strong genetic component. American Indians, Hispanics, Asians, and Pacific Islanders seem especially susceptible.

Unfortunately, government and other organizations do a poor job getting the “bad diet” message out. Generalized advice to “change your diet, increase your level of physical activity, and maintain a healthy weight is either not heard or simply ignored.

As a result, the epidemic rages on, while the number of afflicted and the costs of treating them escalate rapidly. This presents investors with opportunities. Below are three companies whose products and services help people with diabetes stem the effects of this intractable disease.

Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) is a $90 billion Danish company that derives 73 percent of its revenue from diabetic products and services. The company is the world’s largest insulin maker and has several new drugs in the FDA pipeline. In February, the company’s price plummeted after the FDA demanded additional tests for its long-acting insulin analogue Tresiba.

The company is now betting nearly $3.7 billion in the oral diabetes market that it estimates to be nearly $18 billion by 2020.

Novo Nordisk’s stock has been trending up since the Tresiba disappointment. The company has strong revenue growth and is nearly debt free.

MannKind (NASDAQ: MNKD) has been much in the news the last few years. The excitement centers on its inhalable insulin drug Afreeza. The drug breezed through its phase III trials in mid-August, but FDA approval is still uncertain.

As most insulin is taken by (sometimes painful) injection, Afreeza could be a game changer. MannKind’s fortunes will rise or fall dramatically on the FDA’s decision.

MannKind is currently not profitable and book value is negative. Investors are pinning their hopes on Afreeza. The company’s share price, over $10 in March 2010, is now a little over $5.
Biodel! (NASDAQ: BIOD) is a $50 million, relatively unknown micro-cap that’s attempting to position itself in the fast growing markets for rapid-action insulin and glucagon.

Glucagon is a rescue drug that has the opposite effect of insulin, boosting blood sugar when levels drop too low. The company hopes to prosper with fast-growing demand for these two products. Biodel predicts the glucagon market will grow 6-8 fold over the next 8 years.

Biodel’s stock, down some 50 percent since late August, may now be in buying range. In September, Biodel’s CEO bought 10,000 shares at $3.34. Currently, the price is around $2.6. Insider buying usually indicates management has confidence in their company and now you can buy Biodel 22 percent below what the CEO paid. But then, CEOs have been known to be overly optimistic.

Sadly, the diabetes epidemic shows little sign of abating. Until (or if) it does, demand for diabetic products and services is almost guaranteed. Companies that can supply better products and services for this disease should do well.

Of the three companies above, Novo-Nordisk is the most conservative play. Its size and broad array of products and services make it the “safest” investment in this volatile sector. MannKind is strongly speculative. If Afrezza is approved by the FDA and lives up to its promise,  the stock could skyrocket. If not, it will likely plummet. Biodel is also speculative but its recent price decline, followed by insider buying is an encouraging sign.

All pharmaceutical companies live or die by FDA approval and the above three are no exception.

M-Pesa, the system that revolutionized mobile payments in Kenya and beyond, is not capital intensive for Safaricom, but the company has to pay 10% of revenues to Vodafone, which runs the system's technology backbone. Safaricom is planning to take this job on itself going forward, which should increase profitability, though there would be some operational risk if they can't deliver the same level of service. M-Pesa has now spawned M-Shwari, which is the same concept but adds mobile banking services such as the provision of credit. This new service is delivered in partnership with the unlisted Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA).

Panasonic Corp., Japan's largest consumer electronics maker, climbed 6.8 percent after posting profit that beat esti! mates. STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. Our overall plus 12% STR growth came from a healthy blend of plus 23% growth for Kona, plus 14% growth for Redhook, and plus 1% growth for Widmer Brothers; all accompanied by the continued expansion of Omission in our international markets."

5 Best Prefered Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Ferchem Egypt Fertilizers and Chemicals (FERC)

Ferchem Egypt Fertilizers and Chemicals is an Egypt-based company engaged in the establishment and operation of a factory for mixing and packaging of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides and hormones, as well as other agricultural related activities. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jim Jubak]

Cheniere also has received other good news on Corpus Christi. To get a permit for the unrestricted export of liquefied natural gas, a facility has to win approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). DOE has accelerated its permit process, but FERC approval has become a major bottleneck, since the commission needs to coordinate studies from several other agencies before it can complete its review. Cheniere has recently received a scheduling notice from FERC, which looks to put that facility on track for a permit ruling by the end of 2014 or early 2015.

It was formerly known as Caterpillar Tractor Co. and changed its name to Caterpillar Inc. in 1986. Caterpillar Inc. was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Peoria, Illinois.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt Thalman]

Lastly, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) is down 1% today after industrial-production growth in China missed economists' expectations yesterday. Although April's production grew to 9.3% from 8.9% in March, it was still below the 9.5% which many had estimated. This report is just another indication that major economies around the world that have been going strong over the past few years are now slowing down. And with Europe struggling to get moving, the U.S. only slowly coming back, and developing countries weakening, Caterpillar will feel some pressure in the form of low or even negative sales growth.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) is taking the biggest hit on the Dow, crashing 3.1% today. The company relies on growth in emerging markets to grow sales, and China's GDP numbers will always affect the stock in the short term. A lot of this weakness is already priced into the stock, so it may not be bad for long-term investors. The company reports earnings next Monday, and estimates call for $1.44 per share in earnings, down from $2.37 a year ago.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Investors waiting for Caterpillar (CAT) to turn into a butterfly will have to wait a while longer.

The maker of heavy machinery said profits fell 44% during the third quarter, while earnings-per share dropped to $1.45, well below forecasts for $1.68. Caterpillar also slashed its guidance for full-year earnings to $5.50, down from $6.50.

It’s fair to say investors were expecting more. In the days ahead of the report, share of Caterpillar had traded up to the top-end of the range they’d been trading in for the last six months. Instead, Caterpillar’s stock has fallen 6.2% to $83.69 at 12:43 p.m. today, bringing it back towards the low end of the range.

Caterpillar also had the misfortune to report on a day when investors are concerned that China could take steps tighten credit. And with Caterpillar’s exposure to emerging markets, that’s likely hitting shares as well.

Caterpillar’s dismal report is weighing on other stocks machinery companies.Terex(TEX) has fallen 2.5% to $34.37, Joy Global (JOY) has dropped 1.1% to $53.91 and Manitowoc (MTW) is off 1.9% at $19.36.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Smith]

A few of the compelling companies
From my perspective, the message to be taken away from Stuart's presentation is simply that, even in the face of potential U.S. economic distress, a well-structured portfolio will contain at least a modicum of energy of names. For starters I'd look to Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the world's leading oilfield services company and energy's technology major domo. Given its operations in about 85 countries, a worldwide energy cataclysm would seemingly be required for the big company to face a significant slowdown.
