Wednesday proved to be another example of the resiliency of the bull market in stocks, as major market benchmarks bounced back from yesterday's losses to regain a substantial chunk of their lost ground. Even though U.S. GDP figures for the first quarter got revised downward to an ugly drop of 2.9%, few investors believe that the decline is anything but a one-time seasonal aberration. Helping to lead the market higher today were stocks from a number of different industries, including Penn Virginia (NYSE: PVA ) , Hanesbrands (NYSE: HBI ) , and zulily (NASDAQ: ZU ) .

Penn Virginia climbed 12% after the oil and gas production company got a wake-up call from investor George Soros, who owns about 9% of the company. Soros has said that he believes that Penn Virginia needs to put itself up for sale in order to maximize shareholder value, and if Penn Virginia doesn't do so, then Soros will have to take further action that could result in a proxy fight or other activist-investor activity. Soros also cited alleged mistakes by Penn Virginia management, which included privately offering convertible securities in a manner that diluted existing shareholders, and failing to make best use of the proceeds of that sale. Given the huge promise in energy, Soros' move shows that Penn Virginia, and similarly situated companies, can't afford just to move slowly without a firm strategy for the future.

Right off the bat investors should know that if this happens, one company in particular will see its earnings jump, and that's Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE: EEP ) . The master limited partnership watched volumes on its North Dakota liquids pipelines shrink by nearly half in the first quarter, as producers favored rail shipments. If the pendulum swings back, we should see its numbers on this system follow suit.

But this too is starting to shift. If you look at the most-recent IPOs on the New York Stock Exchange, you'll find many corners of the energy industry represented:
Tallgrass Energy Partners-- Natural gas midstream, debuted May 14 KNOT Offshore Partners (NYSE: KNOP ) -- Shuttle tankers, debuted April 10 SunCoke Energy Partners (NYSE: SXCP ) -- Coal/coke making, debuted Jan. 18 CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR ) -- Mid-continent refining, debuted Jan. 17There have also been a few MLP-related funds to hit the market this year, including Global X Junior MLP ETFand Neuberger Berman MLP Income Fund.
- [By Robert Rapier] There were a half a dozen initial public offerings (IPOs) by master limited partnerships in the first half of the year, and all but one are now in the green while one has nearly doubled in value.
The first MLP IPO of 2013 debuted on Jan. 15. USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC), which I mentioned in last week’s issue, provides compression services for the oil and gas industry. Units have advanced 36 percent since the IPO, and at the current price yield 7.3 percent.
The day after the USA Compression Partners IPO, CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR) made its debut. CVRR was spun off from CVR Energy (NYSE: CVI), and both companies remain majority-owned by Carl Icahn. CVR Refining’s primary assets are two refineries located in Kansas and Oklahoma with a combined processing capacity of approximately 185,000 barrels per day (bpd). These refineries are strategically located near the major Cushing, Oklahoma shipment and storage hub, with easy access to discounted feedstock from the nearby Permian basin, as well as the Bakken shale and Canadian oil sands.
But refiners have struggled with diminished margins in 2013 because of a much lower Brent-WTI differential. After the recently concluded second quarter, CVRR declared a distribution of $1.35 per unit, bringing its per-unit distributions for the first half of the year to $2.93. At the same time, CVR Refining lowered its annual distribution target to a range of $4.10 to $4.80 per unit. This was lower than the outlook issued in March, when it foresaw annual distributions of $5.50 to $6.50. CVRR units slid on the news, and are presently trading slightly below the $25 IPO price. The lower end of the revised forecast implies distributions of $1.17 per unit in the second half of the year, for a forward annualized yield of 10 percent based on the recent $23.50 unit price.

Question: Do you see continued upside for Magellan Midstream Partners LP (NYSE: MMP)?
Answer: I like Magellan Midstream crude oil exposure, and I love that the GP takes no incentive distribution rights, meaning LP unitholders receive 100 percent of distributable cash flow.

In China, LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK ) and Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE ) are trying to grow in systems but with billions of dollars in debt and extremely low margins they can't compete with First Solar. So, even their higher-efficiency modules put them behind the curve.

The state of the Chinese solar industry has grown increasingly dire recently, as Suntech Power defaulted on its bonds rather than receive an anticipated bailout from the Chinese government. LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK ) has also faced big problems, having "partially defaulted" on bonds last month and negotiating a settlement with many of the bondholders. Yet although ReneSola has similar debt challenges, it was able to secure a $51 million loan from the China Development Bank, giving it more breathing room to try to work its way out of its financial troubles.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Lee Jackson]
C&J Energy Services Inc. (NYSE: CJES) undertook an aggressive expansion plan for 2013. That strategy culminated in several deals during the fourth quarter and further plans for 2014. The domestic hydraulic fracturing specialist has spent the past couple of years expanding the business line and, surprisingly, building new equipment. Now with natural gas inventories plunging to five-year lows, C&J Energy is positioned to take advantage of a market where utilization is already firming. Jefferies price target holds steady at $28, and the consensus estimate is $25. Shares closed Friday at $24.50.

C&J Energy Services (NYSE: CJES )
One of the more interesting purchases this quarter is the $7.4 million Soros poured into C&J Energy Services. The oilfield service company specializes in complex well completions, making it an important company for extracting ever-harder-to-reach oil and gas. With operations spanning the most active shale plays, an investment in C&J is one that benefits as oil and gas companies drill more wells using even more complex hydraulic fracturing techniques. - [By Roberto Pedone]
One oil and gas equipment and services player that insiders are active in here is C&J Energy Services (CJES), which provides hydraulic fracturing, coiled tubing, wireline, and other complementary services to oil and gas exploration and production companies in the U.S. Insiders are buying this stock into major weakness, since shares have dropped sharply lower over the last three months by 34%.
C&J Energy Services has a market cap of $1 billion and an enterprise value of $1.3 billion. This stock trades at a cheap valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 19.8 and a forward price-to-earnings of 9.9. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 10.7%, and for next year it's pegged at 42.2%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $20.30 million and its total debt is $345.85 million.
A director just bought 340,887 shares, or about $6.38 million worth of stock, at $18.69 per share.
From a technical perspective, CJES is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock has recently started to rebound higher off its new 52-week low of $16.66 a share. That rebound is now starting to push shares of CJES within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.
If you're bullish on CJES, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above its new 52-week low of $16.66 and then once it breaks out above some key near-term overhead resistance at $19.86 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 1.41 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CJES will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels $21.66 to its 50-day moving average of $23.63 a share.
