Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By abirk] y behind the popular namesake beverage platform that turns tap water into sparkling soda, is surely a company to watch out for. In an effort to expand its presence as well as combat waning sales in the perceived "unhealthy drinks" arena, beverage companies via partnerships or their own research team, are bringing new products to market to entice consumers. SodaStream markets itself to consumers who consider themselves socially and environmentally responsible. It's mostly marketed to health-conscious consumers. According to Yonah Lloyd, SodaStream chief corporate development and communications officer, ome soda making is still a new category in the U.S. with over 98% of homes as potential customers./p>

    Performance Report Card

SodaStream's revenue climbed 26% to $168.1 million in the fourth quarter, above estimates of $167.3 million. Net income was $700,000 versus $7.5 million a year earlier. EBDITDA decreased 31.4% to $8.7 million from $12.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. The decline in the profit was attributed primarily to a lower average selling price, largely through discounting and promotions, an unfavorable change in the foreign currency exchange rate, and a shift in sales channels.

But, on the other hand, SodaStream sold 4.4 million soda maker machines, an increase of 27% from 2012. Moreover, consumables sales grew 25% as a result of 30% growth in gas refill units and a 22% jump in flavored units. This drove full year revenue to $562 million, up 29% from last year.

SodaStream saw strong revenue growth in the Americas, where its revenue increased 16%, while in Western Europe, revenue increased 38%. In the Asia Pacific, SodaStream's revenue grew 28%, while 36% growth was seen in the CEMEA (Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa) region.

    Sign of Relief

SodaStream may be down, as measured by its recent stock price performance, but it is certainly not out, as evidenced by a growing international

Really? Just wait until SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) hears about this.

SodaStream has made it a sport of calling out Coca-Cola in the past for the anti-environmental nature of canned and bottled pop. One of SodaStream's selling points is that the beverage system that turns still water into carbonated soda can save 2,000 cans and bottles of soda a year for a typical household. It's at the very heart of the SodaStream television commercials, with soda bottles bursting, that have been airing since late last year.

Advisors' Opinion:

One cyclical consumer goods player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Xerium Technologies (XRM), a manufacturer and supplier of two types of consumable products, clothing and roll covers, used mainly in the production of paper. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 313%.

If you take a look at the chart for Xerium Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $9.94 to its recent high of $12.97 a share. During that uptrend, shares of XRM have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of XRM within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in XRM if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $12.97 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 100,685 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then XRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $14.04 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give XRM a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $18 to $20 a share.

Traders can look to buy XRM off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support at $12.28, or near its 50-day at $11.35 a share. One can also buy XRM off strength once it takes out $12.97 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Grace L. Williams]

Here at STW, wee covered Lululemon (LULU)–a lot. The good, the bad, the neutral and of course, wee thrown in more yoga metaphors than you can shake a stick at for good measure.

Today, however, it’s not all about Lululemon. But it is about athletic apparel as Canaccord Genuity Camilo Lyon takes a look at sentiment on Lululemon alongside competitors Nike (NKE) and Under Armour (UA).

In the note, Lyon writes that the athletic apparel industry is poised to grow this year as more consumers jump on the sportswear as everyday apparel bandwagon. We’re thinking: the velour track suit craze of the 2000s meets today fabrics, styles and cuts. We’re also hoping this craze doesn grow to involve clothes with messages like “Juicy” scrawled across the hiney.

Getting back to that note: Lyon noted that all three companies could benefit from a potential ease in duty costs:

We believe there is a potential for duty costs from Vietnam to materially ease in 2016 on exports to the U.S. Currently duty rates range from 32%-35% and the expectation is that those costs could go to zero. If this comes to fruition, we believe it would be a significant benefit.

Regarding Lululemon, Lyon noted that an increase in marketing could help bring customers back to its stores and revive its market-share lead. Lyon also considers the addition of more quality assurance technicians a positive. He explains:

Lululemon now has offices in Hong Kong and Taiwan to monitor the quality of the outgoing garments, and is testing its production runs with greater frequency. As such, we expect product flow improvements to happen over the course of 2014, resulting in a gradual and sequentially improving comp trajectory.

Shares of Lululemon have dropped 1% to $49.37 at 3 p.m. today. Nike has gained 1.2% to $78.34, while Under Armour is down 0.5% at 115.53.
