Best Long Term Stocks To Own For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Since 2008, the U.S. economy has shown relatively consistent signs of improvement. The stock market has recovered all of its pre-recession losses, the national unemployment rate is ready to push back below 7.0% and manufacturing productivity has risen to multi-year highs.

However, this progress has not entirely filtered into all sections of the economy. Personal debt levels remain elevated from the broader historical perspective, and this is discouraging in terms of overall growth prospects as we move into next year.

In addition, the Federal Reserve has committed to start reducing its quantitative easing stimulus programs. At its December meeting, the Fed decided to taper its stimulus purchases by $10 billion each month. It is now clear that the Fed's historic stimulus programs should not be viewed as a long term support mechanism.

Another under-$10 drug retailer that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is China Jo-Jo Drugstores (CJJD), which operates as a retailer and distributor of pharmaceutical and other health care products in the People's Republic of China. This stock has been on fire for the last three months, with shares ripping higher by 46%.

If you take a look at the chart for China Jo-Jo Drugstores you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of 65 cents per share to its recent high of $1.18 a share. During that uptrend, shares of CJJD have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of CJJD within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some near-term and past overhead resistance levels.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in CJJD if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $1.18 a share and then once it clears some past overhead resistance levels at $1.21 to $1.32 a share high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 99,122 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CJJD will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.70 to its 52-week high at $1.99 a share.

Traders can look to buy CJJD off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits just below its 50-day moving average of 98 cents per share. One can also buy CJJD off strength once it starts to clear those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ: MNST), a mid cap marketer and distributor of energy drinks and alternative beverages, has been a monster of a performer since the end of the financial crisis as the stock is up around 308% over the past five years, but could new or overlooked players like small cap beverage stocksJones Soda Co (OTCMKTS: JSDA), Celsius Holdings, Inc (OTCMKTS: CELH) and Konared Corp (OTCBB: KRED) repeat that performance? A look strictly at the long term performance of all three small caps might have you thinking otherwise. After all, none of these small cap beverage stocks are profitable whilethe beverage industry can be a long hard expensive slog just to increase market share by one or two points when you are competing for shelf space with industry giants like Pepsi and Coke. But past performance is just thatthe past and only part of the story as there is much more to consider about these small cap beverage stocks which could also make them potential acquisition targets by larger beverage players seeking to expand their product line up with innovative products:

Karen Roach/Shutterstock When singles are looking for love, they typically don't start by checking out a potential mate's credit score. But maybe they should. A recent survey of 1,010 married people by Experian (EXPGY) Consumer Services division found that 95 percent of those polled rate financial responsibility as an important attribute in a spouse. Compare that to physical attractiveness -- often the first criterion we use to judge potential mates -- which was deemed an important trait for compatibility by just 86 percent. (Personal compatibility led the list at 98 percent.) Financial communication can be an important barometer of how successful a relationship will be, although women place more of a premium on it than men. Among those surveyed, 73 percent of women and 60 percent of men said that being open about personal finances and credit makes a person more attractive as a spouse. On the flip side, 59 percent of women and 44 percent of men say that a partner who avoids talking about those things is less attractive as a spouse. What's Your Number? "Financial debt and a person's credit score are so important to disclose before you tie the proverbial knot," says Les Parrott, co-author with his wife, Leslie, of "Making Happy" and "The Good Fight." "We can tell you about lots of disastrous money surprises when a person isn't up front about this." It's important to discuss all aspects of your individual and shared financial situations regularly with your significant other, but because your credit score will impact your ability to make major purchases like a home or a car, it's especially important to determine whether a low credit score tied to one or both of you may affect your long-term goals, says Suzanna de Baca, vice president of wealth strategies at Ameriprise Financial (AMP). "An important step toward having a successful relationship is being willing to share your feelings about money with your partner. This includes being honest about past and p
