10 Best Sliver Stocks To Watch For 2015

When it comes to naming names, advisors pick all the big companies — the PIMCOs and the iShares of the mutual fund and ETF worlds — as their favorite fund purveyors, according to Phoenix Marketing International.

But interesting details emerge in the survey results — especially when the responses are broken down according to the affiliation models of individual advisors.

Phoenix’s semiannual survey of financial advisors was conducted in November among 1,318 advisors who recommend securities, retirement services and/or insurance products to their clients. It asked advisors which brand of funds they were most likely to recommend in the next six months.

Registered investment advisors picked low-fee index investing giant Vanguard as their favorite, while broker-dealer reps heavily favored American Funds.

“My gut reaction when I saw the survey results was that the underlying funds used probably had to do with fee structures,” Terrance Reilly of the investment management practice of the Philadelphia law firm Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, told ThinkAdvisor when last November's survey was released, in April. “RIAs are used to charging management fees, so they’re willing to put clients in a fund on a no-load basis, as opposed to the full-service [wirehouse] firms which charge a more traditional commission-based fee structure.”

10 Best Sliver Stocks To Watch For 2015: Whiting USA Trust I(WHX)

Whiting USA Trust I is a REIT. The trust was founded in 2007 and is based in Austin, Texas.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another name that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Whiting USA Trust I (WHX). This stock hasn't done much so far in 2013, with shares up just 4.5%.

If you look at the chart for Whiting USA Trust I, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $3.65 to its intraday high of $4.87 a share. During that move, shares of WHX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now spiked shares of WHX back above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. Shares of WHX are now quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in WHX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.90 to $5.04 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 321,220 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then WHX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.23 to $8.01 a share.

Traders can look to buy WHX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $4.12 a share. One can also buy WHX off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Finally, you need to consider going where services you want are offered. For instance, health-care real-estate investment trusts Senior Housing Properties (NYSE: SNH  ) , LTC Properties (NYSE: LTC  ) , and Health Care REIT (NYSE: HCN  ) , which recently acquired Sunrise Senior Living, all offer facilities in various places across the nation to provide for retirees who need health-care assistance in their living arrangements. But if your particular medical needs require specialists that are concentrated in particular cities, it's far more important for your health to be close to those specialists -- even if it means paying more in taxes.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap debt collection stocks likeAsta Funding, Inc (NASDAQ: ASFI), Encore Capital Group, Inc (NASDAQ: ECPG) and Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc (NASDAQ: PRAA) could be the latest target of a government shakedown or crackdown as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week thatbefore it formally proposes any rules for debt collection, it wants to hear how collectors verify borrowers' information and communicate with consumers. In other words, debt collectors could be restricted from using text messages, social media or other Internet-based tools in their pursuit to collect debts. With about one in 10 Americans coming out of the financial crisis with some debt in collection, investing in small capdebt collection stocks has been profitable for investors. However, there is no timeline for when any new rules might be released for review or come into effect.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

There a lot of moving parts to Asta Funding (ASFI), but there appears to be a great deal of value that isn reflected in the current stock price. ASFI stock is trading at less than 65% of book value, but several of its debt collection assets are carried at zero cost basis and yet may have substantial value. The balance sheet is strong with more than $90 million in cash. ASFI has been moving into other businesses including disability claims to increase its growth opportunities over the next few years. It a fairly complex business, but it is very cheap — and the first sign of good news could send the shares a lot higher.

Advisors' Opinion:

Just for the record, Superconductor Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCON) isn't over the hump yet. But, given the likelihood that it could get over the hump with little to no fanfare, now's the time to put SCON on your radar.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

A week and a half ago, not to mention a couple of months ago, I suggested Superconductor Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCON) was a budding bullish play worthy of your attention. I get the suspicion that while more than a handful of traders read my take, the vast majority of the people who read that commentary weren't as impressed with (SCON) as I was. That's fine. Yet, being a diehard - and perhaps being a glutton for punishment - this is one of those trading ideas I can't let go of, mostly because Superconductor Technologies refuse to give up. Thing is, the stock's given me some new bullish fodder to use since the last look back on January 6th.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's not the kind of thing anybody would have expected to hear, or read, five months ago, but Superconductor Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCON) is close to becoming one of the market's best bullish short-term bets. Yes, we're talking about the same Superconductor Technologies that plunged from $2.57 to $1.66 in August - hitting new lows in the process - on news that the company was issuing $12 million worth of new stock... right in front of news that SCON booked another significant quarterly loss. By November, the disaster's final tally was officially recorded - an 82% plunge in the prior quarter's revenue for SCON. As they say though, nothing lasts forever. That includes a malaise that can hold a stock down. Indeed, it's looking like SCON is about to make an explosive move higher.
