The U.S. government Tuesday said it won’t release key economic data, including the monthly jobs report, while the government is partially closed because of the budget impasse.
In a statement on its website, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said it “will not collect data, issue reports, or respond to public inquiries.” The BLS, part of the Labor Department, was scheduled Friday to release its September payrolls report, a key gauge of labor-market health.
In an internal document released last week, the government separately indicated it will attempt to release a weekly report on jobless claims. The next release of that report was scheduled for Thursday.
Officials at the BLS and the Labor Department weren’t available to comment.
Likewise, the Commerce Department issued a statement Tuesday saying no data will be released from that agency during a government shutdown, including a monthly construction spending report slated for release Tuesday. If the government remains closed, Commerce won’t release a factory orders report set for Thursday.

Commerce is scheduled to release trade and retail sales data the week of Oct. 8. Labor is scheduled to release wholesale inflation, weekly jobless claims and import prices.
