The Companys primary research and development efforts are focused on identifying and developing stem and progenitor cells as potential therapeutic agents. The Company has two therapeutic product development programs, including its CNS Program, which is developing applications for HuCNS-SC cells, its human neural stem cell product candidate, and its Liver Program, which is characterizing the Companys human liver cells as a therapeutic product.

CNS Program

The Company in its CNS Program, is in cli nical development with its HuCNS-SC cells for a range of disorders of the central nervous system. The CNS includes the brain, spinal cord and eye. In February 2012, the Company had completed a Phase I clinical trial in Pelizeaus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD), a fatal myelination disorder in the brain.

The Companys CNS Program is focused on developing clinical applications, in which transplanting HuCNS-SC cells protect or restore organ function of the patient before such function is irreversibly damaged or lost due to disease progression. The Companys initial target indications are PMD, and more generally, diseases in which deficient myelination plays a central role, such as cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis; spinal cord injury, disorders in which retinal degeneration plays a central role, such as age-related macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa. The Companys product candidate, HuCNS-SC cells, is a purified and expanded composition of n! ormal human neural stem cells. Its HuCNS-SC cells can be directly transplanted.

Liver Program

Liver stem or progenitor cells offer an alternative treatment for liver diseases. A liver cellular therapy or cell-based therapeutic provide or support liver function in patients with liver disease. Its NDiff N2B27 is a defined, serum-free medium for the differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells to neural cell types. NDiff N27-AF is a serum-free and animal component-free version of NDiff N27. Its GS1-R is a serum-free media formulation shown to enable the derivation and long-term maintena! nce of tr! ue, germline competent rat embryonic stem cells without the addition of cytokines or growth factors. Its GS2-M is a defined, serum- and feeder-free medium for the derivation and long-term maintenance of true, germline competent mouse iPS cells.

The Company also markets a number of antibody reagents for use in cell detection, isolation and characterization. These reagents are also under the SC Proven brand and it includes STEM24, STEM101, STEM121 and STEM123. Its STEM24 is a human antibody that recognizes human CD24, also known as heat stable antigen (HSA), a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of many human cell types, including immature human hematopoietic cells, peripheral blood lymphocytes, erythrocytes and many human carcinomas. Its CD24 is also a marker of human neural differentiation. Its STEM101 is a human-specific mouse antibody that recognizes the Ku80 protein found in human nuclei. Its STEM121 is a human-specific mouse antibody that recognizes a cytoplasmic protein of human cells. Its STEM123 is a human-specific mouse antibody that recognizes human glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP).

The Companys Other products marketed under SC Proven include total cell genomic DNA (gDNA), RNA and protein lysate reagents purified from homogenous stem cell populations for intra-comparative studies, such as Epigenetic fingerprinting, Southern, Western and Northern blots, PCR, RT-PCR and microarrays. This range of purified stem cell line lysates includes mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells propagated in SC Proven 2i inhibitor-based GS2-M media and mouse ES cell-derived and fetal tissue-derived neural stem (NS) cells propagated in SC Proven RHB-A media.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

When an investor thinks of spinal-related stem cell stocks, usually a name like Neuralstem, Inc (NYSEMKT: CUR) or StemCells Inc (NASDAQ: STEM) comes to mind. And well they should. STEM has logged some amazing breakthroughs in the field of spinal cord repair, while! CUR has ! done the same. Not all back problems are spinal cord related though. In fact, most back problems - and therefore the most opportunity - are bone and disc related problems. That's where a young gun like BioRestorative Therapies (OTCBB: BRTX) can step in and make stem cell waves. BRTX has developed an approach to rejuvenate and revive failing spinal discs, potentially ending pain for millions of back-pain sufferers, and circumventing expensive spinal surgeries that are in increasing burden on insurance companies.

The results of a recent Pew Center Poll regarding attitudes towards abortion and various forms of stem cell research could be a good sign for the stem cell industry along with small cap stem cell stocks like StemCells Inc (NASDAQ: STEM), NeoStem Inc (NASDAQ: NBS), Neuralstem, Inc (NYSEMKT: CUR),International Stem Cell Corp (OTCMKTS: ISCO) and BioRestorative Therapies (OTCBB: BRTX). Basically, Americans think that having an abortion is a moral issue with 49% of American adults believing abortion is morally wrong, 23%view it not as a moral issue and and 15% view it as morally acceptable. However and when Americans were asked about issues surroundinghuman embryos, such as stem cell research or in vitro fertilization, as a matter of morality, their views were different.

With recent M&A in the yoga and athletic-wear space (such as Prana's acquisition by Columbia (COLM) and Lorna Jane now up for sale as per recent media reports), Lululemon’s geographical diversification efforts are timely given that the domestic compet! itive environment is certainly showing no signs of abating.

Royal Alliance Recruits 50-Rep, $1.4B Group

Royal Alliance Associates said late Tuesday that a group of 50 independent advisors, with $1.4 billion in assets and some $8 million in yearly fees & commissions, has just affiliated with it.

Savage & Associates of Toledo, Ohio, which previously used Walnut Street Securities as its broker-dealer, cited Royal’s technology, service and open-architecture platform as key reasons for the move, says the independent broker-dealer, which is part of the AIG-owned Advisor Group.

“We are honored to have a firm as respected in the industry as Savage & Associates join Royal Alliance,” said Royal Alliance President & CEO Arthur Tambaro (left), in a press release. “Their commitment to success and quality client support exemplify the high standards we look for in an affiliating firm.”

The Savage news comes about three months after Royal Alliance added two independent teams in Chicago and Salt Lake City with combined assets of more than $400 million and nearly $3.5 million in yearly fees and commissions. Overall, Royal Alliance has close to 2,000 affiliated advisors with total assets under management of about $45 billion.

“We have strong momentum in a still challenging recruiting environment,” said Kevin Beard, senior vice president of recruiting with Royal Alliance, in a statement. “Savage & Associates is the largest single group we have brought on in 2013, but we have been affiliating quality advisors and OSJs all year, and we have a strong pipeline of recruits looking to join us in the second half.”

According to Royal Alliance, Savage & Associates has a strong reputation for educating its clients while meeting their financial-planning needs. In addition, the group does work in benefits and insurance, custom-employee benefits packages, and retirement products and services.

“We were looking for a partner that not only had the resources and technology to support our business, but also had a true open-architecture philosophy that would allow us to run our firm and take care of our clients as we feel best,” said Savage & Associates President and CEO J.R. Toland, in a statement. “We decided early on that Royal Alliance was the perfect fit for us.”

Hot Japanese Stocks To Own Right Now

Japan needs more women at work HONG KONG (CNNMoney) The Japanese economy slipped into recession in the third quarter, a surprisingly poor performance that could delay a planned sales tax hike and trigger new elections.

Gross domestic product shrank by an annualized 1.6% in the three months ended September, Japan's Cabinet Office said Monday. The result was much worse than the 2.2% expansion expected by economists.

On a quarterly basis, Japan's GDP declined by 0.4% as business investment slipped. Economies are commonly described as being in a technical recession after two straight quarterly contractions.

The disappointing result comes as Japan faces a full slate of questions over tax policy and the country's plan for economic revival -- dubbed "Abenomics."

Hot Japanese Stocks To Own Right Now: Chimerix Inc (CMRX)

Chimerix, Inc., incorporated on April, 07, 2000, is a biopharmaceutical company committed to the discovery, development and commercialization of novel, oral antiviral therapeutics that are designed to transform patient care in areas of high unmet medical need. Its lipid technology has given rise to two clinical-stage compounds, CMX001 and CMX157, which have demonstrated the potential for enhanced antiviral activity and safety in convenient, orally administered dosing regimens.

CMX001 is an orally administered drug that utilizes its lipid technology to deliver intracellular concentrations of a potent antiviral compound, cidofovir-diphosphate (CDV-PP). Following oral dosing, CMX001 is absorbed through the gut, remains intact in the plasma, and is readily taken up by and delivered into cells. Once inside cells, CMX001 is converted into CDV-PP, which acts as an alternative substrate in a replicating virus. CMX001 is similar to the drug cidofovir in that both drugs are converted into CDV-PP once inside cells. Although cidofovir is approved for administration in an intravenous formulation, Vistide, it requires a plasma concentration to deliver a therapeutic level of cidofovir into cells and its use is limited due to the risk of kidney damage.

CMX157, Its second clinical stage compound, is an oral nucleotide compound in Phase 1 development for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. In July 2012, the Company granted Merck an exclusive worldwide license to develop and commercialize CMX157 for all human uses. Merck is responsible for all development and marketing activities for CMX157 on a worldwide basis.

Top Low Price Companies To Buy Right Now

Top Low Price Companies To Buy Right Now: Ishares Trust United States Treasury (TIP)

iShares Lehman TIPS Bond Fund (the Fund) seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the inflation-protected sector of the United States Treasury market as defined by the Lehman Brothers U.S. Treasury TIPS Index (the Index). The Index includes all publicly issued, the United States Treasury inflation-protected securities that have at least one-year remaining to maturity, are rated investment grade and have $250 million or more of outstanding face value. In addition, the securities must be denominated in United States dollars and must be fixed-rate and non-convertible securities.

The Index is a market capitalization-weighted index. The Fund invests in a representative sample of the securities in the Index, which has a similar investment profile as the Index. The Fund's investment advisor is Barclays Global Fund Advisor.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

In recent years, though, investors have discounted the potential impact of inflation on their portfolios. Consider these facts:

Gold is the traditional safe-haven investment for those who believe that inflation will take away the purchasing power of paper currency. Yet the plunge in gold prices has led to a mass exodus of investor interest in gold, with the popular SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) losing billions of dollars not just due to price declines but also as investors have taken money out of the ETF entirely. Inflation-indexed bonds like the Treasury's TIPS have climbed so far in price that their real inflation-adjusted yields are negative, even for bonds that don't mature for another 20 years. That's been excellent news for existing investors in iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEMKT: TIP  ) and similar inflation-indexed bond investments, but i! t presents no inflation protection for those considering purchases now. The sole fly in the inflation ointment has come from energy prices, with gasoline and heating-oil prices having remained stubbornly high despite plentiful domestic production from unconventional plays as refiners Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) , Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) , and others have greatly boosted their exports of refined products rather than letting Americans reap the benefits of high supply. Yet even the oil market has seen international spreads narrow, and gasoline prices have finally started to come down modestly, providing further downward pressure on inflation.

Based on the conventional understanding of inflation, you'd think that all these signs of its demise were a good thing. The truth is far less clear.

    Where to invest?
There are countless possibilities for building your retirement portfolio to cover Social Security's gap, depending on your personal risk tolerance, timeline, and need for cash. Here are decent index-style ETFs across various asset types to consider when building your plan:

Domestic stocks. The Vanguard Total Market (NYSEMKT: VTI  ) ETF is a one-stop-shop that gives you access to around 99.5% by market cap of the publicly held U.S. stocks traded on major exchanges. A mere 3% turnover and microscopically low 0.05% expense ratio makes this a low-cost way to invest in the overall stock market. Investment-grade bonds. The iShares iBoxx $Invest Grade Corp Bond   (NYSEMKT: LQD  ) ETF owns nearly $24 billion worth of investment-grade corporate bonds. A small 4% turnover and low 0.15% expense ratio make this a low-cost way to get bond exposure. Real estate. The SPDR Dow Jones REIT (NYSEMKT: RWR  ) ETF has a bit over $2 billion invested in real estate investment trusts, attempting to match the Dow Jones Select REIT index. With a reasonable 7% turnover and a still pretty low 0.25% expense ratio, this is ! a reasona! ble way to get real estate exposure without turning yourself into a landlord. Foreign stocks. Vanguard's Total International Stock Index (NASDAQ: VXUS  ) ETF has nearly $90 billion in foreign stocks under its control, owning pieces of more than 6,100 stocks from 45 countries. Inflation-protected government bonds. The iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEMKT: TIP  ) ETF has around $20 billion invested in U.S. Treasury inflation-protected bonds. But bond investments have seen huge losses. Consider how broad-based the bond-market massacre has been:

Broad measures of the overall bond market have shown definite signs of weakness, with iShares Core U.S. Bond (NYSEMKT: AGG  ) falling more than 3% since the end of April and the actively managed PIMCO Total Return (NYSEMKT: BOND  ) down almost 4% over that time frame. Longer-term-focused bonds have posted even worse results, with iShares 20+ Treasury (NYSEMKT: TLT  ) having fallen more than 8% since late April. Inflation-protected bonds are generally seen providing some defense against rising interest rates, but iShares Barclays TIPS Bond (NYSEMKT: TIP  ) has fallen by more than 7%. Even niche areas of the bond market have seen big losses, with the municipal-bond-focused iShares S&P Municipal Bond (NYSEMKT: MUB  ) down almost 5%, while the emerging-market bond ETF WisdomTree Emerging Markets Local Debt has fallen 10%.

A combination of factors has led to some of these declines, with the strong U.S. dollar hurting international bonds. But the driving force behind all of the drops comes from rising interest rat! es, and i! nvestors need to understand the threat that those rates pose to the future of their bond investments.

Getty Images Once upon a time, AT&T (T) urged its customers to "reach out and touch someone" with a long-distance phone call (which Ma Bell could charge extra for at the time). Those were simpler times. Today, in our post-9/11 world, if you reach out by phone, you may end up touching more people than you bargain for. And those people may have guns, badges and court-approved wiretap warrants. Top States for Wiretapping This is especially true in Nevada, Colorado, California and New York. A recent report by the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts said these four states issue the majority of wiretap authorizations in America (measured proportionate to their populations): Nevada authorized 38.2 wiretap authorizations per 500,000 residents Colorado authorized 12.4 per 500,000 California authorized 11.7 per 500,000 And New York State authorized 10.7 per 500,000 Rounding out the top 10 states for state-sanctioned wiretapping are Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri and New Jersey -- in that order. In each state, state and federal law enforcement sought and received authorizations to conduct more than six wiretaps per 500,000 residents. (In case you were wondering, that office points out that it is not authorized to collect and report data on NSA wiretaps regulated by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978). According to Pew Research, which analyzed the report, 90 percent of the wiretaps authorized in 2013 were authorized to investigate "criminal drug-related offenses." The 3,576 total wiretaps authorized resulted in 3,744 arrests (more than the number of wiretaps authorized). But the conviction rate from these wiretaps was less than 19 percent -- just 709 convictions. (Curiously, AO also notes that in all of 2013, only one application for a wiretap was turned down.) However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are short, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

Top Oil Companies To Invest In Right Now

The current turbulent and volatility witnessed in all the asset classes including equities, bonds, oil gold, industrial metals, real estate etc and the synchronized global bear market which we are currently observing is leaving many investors totally agashed. There has been lots of panic and every investor, analyst, fund manager are debating whether this is a bull market correction or a bear market and if the answer is the latter, than whether a structural or a cyclical one. The developed markets are currently under lot of turmoil due to the debt default problems in the Europe and danger of the euro breakout while the US has its own problems of high debt, slowing growth and elevated unemployment levels. The problems of the developed world are well documented and there may not be any need to discuss them in detail over here. And as far as solutions for the same is concerned, then as of now their Governments and other regulatory authorities have not found it. Some market experts like Mr. Robert Prechter of Elliot Wave International is predicting the US Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) would go to around 400 levels i.e. a crash of almost 97% from the current 12000 levels. While on the other hand Mr. Glen Neely who follows the Neo Wave believes that the US DJIA will touch 100000 (yes, there are 5 zeros after 1) not earlier by the year 2020 but latest by 2060. Such, is the difference in opinion between two renowned individuals following Elliott wave.

    Other beneficiaries
The drilling contractors themselves are not the only ones who stand to benefit from this trend of course. Refining and marketing companies that have most of their operations in North America, such as Phillips 66 (NYSE: PSX  ) also have great exposure to increased domestic production. With about 82% of their production capacity inside of the U.S., Phillips is in an excellent position to benefit from the cost-efficiencies that come with having your "suppliers" very close to you.

As far as the best buy post drop — it comes down to risk tolerance. If you believe oil prices are going to remain strong in 2014, and you are aggressively inclined, there are several solid names. One that may not be on a lot of people’s radars is Diamondback Energy (NASDAQ: FANG), a Permian Basin-focused producer which IPO’d in October of 2012 and has gained 140 percent year-to-date. It was off recently 20 percent from its highs of early November, but has once again been moving up over the past few sessions. If the stock experiences a sharp correction as a result of broader market weakness, this is one that aggressive investors should consider.

    The best part
QEP Midstream provides all of its gathering services through fee-based contracts, which means there are no ups and downs from commodity risk -- just stable, predictable income. This is pretty common for midstream partnerships borne of an oil company spinoff. Holly Energy Partners is a perfect example. Its revenue is 100% fee-based because HollyFrontier (NYSE: HFC  ) is more or less its only customer.

In the following video, Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool's director of investment planning, looks more closely at inflation and its impact over the past 12 months. Dan notes that for those who've seen little wage growth, stable prices have been good, but the Federal Reserve would prefer to see inflation at somewhat higher levels of around 2%. Dan points to the energy markets as a key reason for low inflation, as gasoline prices are down more than 5% from year-ago levels. Dan explains how that's been bad news for refiners Marathon Petroleum (NYSE: MPC  ) , Valero Energy (NYSE: VLO  ) , and HollyFrontier (NYSE: HFC  ) , even though cheap crude availability has still allowed them to be profitable. Dan concludes that if plentiful energy supplies keep prices low, it could further dampen inflationary pressure for years to come.

As investors, though, it's important to know who this impacts in a positive way. In the video below, Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe explains why Canadian oil sands producers Suncor (NYSE: SU  ) and Canadian Natural Resources (NYSE: CNQ  ) will benefit more than others from the movement of oil sands out of Canada, and why mid-continent focused refiners like HollyFrontier (NYSE: HFC  ) and CVR Refining (NYSE: CVRR  ) are in the best position of the US refiners to capture value from these cheap rail shipments of Canadian crude.

In 2010 Brazil HRT Participacoes em Petroleo S.A. (HRTPY.PK) raised $1.5 billion in an IPO to fund a highly touted and highly expensive oil & gas exploration campaign in both the Amazon and offshore Namibia. Management was very promotional and overpromised and underdelivered. The three exploration wells in Namibia were all failures and the Conclusion of Solimoes Gas Monetization Study leads the market (myself included) to conclude that there is little or no present value in the discoveries in the Solimoes basin. The stock has lost 85% in just the last year, and over 97% in the last three years. Early investors like Southeastern Asset Management have lost most of their money and have either given up or believe the market cap has become too small and insignificant to warrant further examination.
