The View From the Summit

Print Friendly

The Investing Daily Summit

This week I will speak about energy investing at Investing Daily's annual Investing Summit in Alexandria, Virginia. Last year's presentation in Scottsdale, Arizona was my first since joining Investing Daily, and I laid out my personal philosophies for creating long-term wealth. They are:

Spend less than I earn and invest the rest

Minimize personal debt

Invest in businesses I understand

Understand the risk level

Avoid investments that are dependent on government subsidies and/or mandates

Identify long-term trends and invest accordingly

Have an exit strategy

I will cover a number of long-term trends in the energy business. One is that oil will continue to be hard to replace, and even though new supplies are coming online, voracious demand from developing countries and the higher costs of developing unconventional reserves will keep prices high. Another is that coal and nuclear power both face a lot of headwinds, and investors have to be extremely picky if they choose to invest in these sectors. On the other hand, solar power's prospects look bright, and solar will in the long run become perhaps our most important source of energy.

Natural Gas Powers Ahead

But the story of the year for me is the developing picture with natural gas. In my presentation last year, I had a slide that simply said "Natural gas is cheap." I went on to explain why I felt like natural gas was undervalued, and I made the case for investing in natural gas producers on the basis of several long-term bullish drivers.

What has happened since then?

Natural gas prices are up about 20 percent since I wrote that, and natural gas producers — undervalued for so long in my opinion — have begun to surge. Over the course of the year we added a number of natural gas producers to the various Energy Strategist portfolios, and by my count now! hold 10 of the country's top 20 as shown in the table below:

140428mlpiitopgasproducers

Top 20 natural gas producers in 2013. Source: Natural Gas Supply Association

For example, we added Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK) — the country's second-largest natural gas producer — to our Aggressive Portfolio on May 13 and have gained 42 percent since. (Check the latest Energy Strategist for our current advice on Chesapeake and the other natural gas producers.)

Devon Finally Bounces

But Chesapeake isn't an exception to the rule. All of our natural gas producers in the portfolios — 100 percent — are sitting on gains. I personally bought the nation's fourth-largest natural gas producer — Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN) — last September because I felt the market was discounting both the potential for higher gas prices and Devon's moves toward even more lucrative liquids production. Devon's shares were pretty flat from the time I bought them until early February. I was in no hurry, because remember, I am targeting long-term trends and positioning accordingly.

But the very cold winter meant I didn't have to wait for investors to recognize the long-term bullish factors that I believe will support a natural gas price rise. The short-term factors lined up as well, as natural gas inventories depleted at a record pace this winter. Since Feb. 1, Devon shares have surged by more than 20 percent, and are regularly breaking through new 52-week highs:

140428mlpiiDVN

A similar picture has emerged for other natural gas stocks. They have all begun to move higher over the past few months. Since most natural gas producers also ha! ve substa! ntial liquids production, oil prices that are stubbornly clinging to $100 a barrel have helped.

Cabot's Production Surges

As I have been saying for months, most of these producers will report better year-over-year results versus last year. Last week Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG) — with most of its focus in Pennsylvania's gas-rich Marcellus Shale and the Eagle Ford crude oil shale of Texas — reported first-quarter results. Some highlights for the quarter were:

Natural gas and liquids production of 119.9 billion cubic feet equivalent (Bcfe), an increase of 34 percent over last year’s comparable quarter

Discretionary cash flow of $319.5 million, an increase of 36 percent over last year’s comparable quarter

Net income excluding selected items of $109.7 million, an increase of 102 percent over last year’s comparable quarter

Total unit costs of $2.66 per thousand cubic feet equivalent (Mcfe), a 19 percent improvement over last year’s comparable quarter

Despite what was shaping up to be a good quarter, shares had recently sold off after Cabot announced production would be flat during the first half of the year as a result of a transition to the more efficient pad drilling. Several brokerage houses even downgraded the company on the basis of this short-term outlook, but shares have surged since last week's earnings report, and are now up 17 percent in the last 10 trading days.

Conclusions

Based on my forecast for natural gas prices this year, I expect this to be a great year for the shares of most major natural gas producers. Some have already made strong advances, but many are still undervalued. For the long-term investor especially, it's certainly not too late to buy in.

Top Construction Stocks To Buy For 2015

By Hal M. Bundrick

NEW YORK (MainStreet) There have been 193 initial public offerings priced in the U.S. this year, an increase of nearly 60% from last year, and a trend on-track to be the most deals seen since the Dot Com bubble of 2000, according to Renaissance Capital.

Why the sudden interest? The CFA Institute, an association of investment professionals, asked members to pinpoint the possible reasons for the surge in IPOs.

"Despite what some might characterize as a building froth, only 28% of the 608 respondents to [our] global poll consider this upswing in IPO activity troubling and indicative of a bubble," writes David Larrabee, director of member and corporate products at the CFA Institute, in a report on the poll. "A plurality of respondents, 38%, attribute the strength to healthy capital markets and investor bullishness, and 26% simply see risk taking on the rise but, importantly, no cause for alarm." Just 8% of respondents to the poll attributed the increase in IPOs to relaxed capital raising rules. Particularly notable is the reversal of fortune for historically poor IPO performance. Renaissance reports the average return for IPOs improved on a sequential basis to 27% in the third quarter, well above the S&P's 5% and the Russell's 6% quarterly gains. "Performance was driven primarily by a higher average first-day pop, which spiked to 19%, the highest level seen since the 2Q 03's 24%," a Renaissance analysis says. Excluding NRG Yield, a rare utilities IPO that garnered strong favor, the research firm reports that the consumer, technology and health care sectors continued to generate the highest returns. Sprouts Farmers Market, a natural and organic grocery chain, has gained 147% since its rollout in late July, putting the consumer sector in the IPO headlines. Three of the top five tech IPOs were on-demand software firms, including cyber security software provider FireEye, which ended the quarter 108% above its offering price. Health care IPO returns were driven by cancer diagnostics company Foundation Medicine, with a 120% total return, as well as a handful of biotech firms. IPOs tied to the housing and construction sectors produced the lowest returns for the third quarter of this year. --Written by Hal M. Bundrick for MainStreet

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Steve Symington]

Almost two months ago, I singled outTile Shop Holdings (NASDAQ: TTS  ) as one ofthree great small-cap stockswith which many investors might not be familiar. After all, the high-end stone and tile specialist still had a market capitalization under $800 million at the time, and only just went public late last year.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Stock market investors were generally pleased with the congressional testimony that Fed chair nominee Janet Yellen gave today, with new expectations that accommodative monetary policy will continue as long as any hint of economic weakness persists. The Dow and S&P 500 reached new record highs yet again, with Dow 16,000 and S&P 1,800 now within a single percentage point. But Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) , Tile Shop Holdings (NASDAQ: TTS  ) , and Millennial Media (NYSE: MM  ) all missed the record run, falling by more than 10% each.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Say whatever you want about Drinks Americas Holdings, L! td. (OTCMKTS:DKAM), but one thing is undeniable... this company is producing a lot of revenue despite being a very small company. More specifically, the DKAM market cap is abnormally low relative to the sales figures the company is putting up.

  • [By Peter Graham]

Small cap stocks Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd (OTCMKTS: DKAM), 7 Star Entertainment Inc (OTCMKTS: SAEE), Rising India Inc (OTCMKTS: RSII) and Big Tree Group Inc (OTCMKTS: BIGG) have all been attracting attention thanks to paid promotions. Of course, there is nothing wrong with properly disclosed and paid for promotions or investor relation activities, but they can backfire on unwary investors and traders alike. So are stock promoters blowing a bunch of hot air regarding these four small cap stocks or are they actually potential winners? Here is a quick reality check to help you decide:

Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd (OTCMKTS: DKAM) Has One of the Top Beers of 2013

Small cap Drinks Americas Holdings mission is to identify and invest the majority brand-building resources on beers and spirits with the greatest growth potential. Currently, Drinks Americas is the exclusive United States broker for leading premium authentic Mexican beers currently available in over 32 states, hundreds of chain retailers and restaurants and is on target to be the leading broker for this growing category in each of the markets in which it operates. • [By Bryan Murphy]

Even though you're reading this now, odds are that three weeks ago you'd never even heard of Drinks Americas Holdings, Ltd. (OTCMKTS:DKAM). And, like so many other young, nano-cap stocks, it would be easy to assume the current strength being exhibited by DKAM is nothing but a short-term phenomenon, meaning there's no particular reason! to jump ! on the stock now. If there was ever a reason to jump onto a micro cap name for a quick trade though, this may be it.

Forest Laboratories Is an Option for Wealthy Investors Who Could Afford to Pay a High Premium

Forest Laboratories Inc. (FRX) is one of the largest U.S.-based pharmaceutical companies in the area of developing, producing and selling central nervous system (CNS)-related prescription drugs. The company also focuses on the development and introduction of new products, including products developed in collaboration with licensing partners.

The company's principal products include Namenda (memantineHCl) for Alzheimer´s disease, Savella (milnacipranHCl) for fibromyalgia, Bystolic for hypertension and Benicar (olmesartanmedoxomil) for high blood pressure.

In this article, let's take a look at this lab and try to explain to investors the reasons this is an apparently appealing investment opportunity.

Cost-Cutting Initiative

Forest Laboratories expects to make savings of $500 million by fiscal 2016 in R&D. The company said about $270 million of the savings will come from streamlining and realigning its research and development arm, while $150 million will result from cutting marketing expenses, with the remaining from reducing general, administrative and other expenses.

The cost-cutting effort could lead also to the elimination of 10% to 20% of its workforce on Long Island. These staffing cuts are part of Project Rejuvenate, a plan announced in December to reduce costs and streamline operations across the company's various locations.

A Deal to Buy Schizophrenia Drug Saphris

The lab agreed to acquire exclusive U.S. rights to Merck & Co. (MRK)'s sublingual tablets for adults with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, paying $240 million for the drug while committing to a slate of unspecified sales milestones.

Forest´s Acquisition

In January 2014, Forest acquired Toronto-based Aptalis, a privately held U.S.-based specialty Gastrointestinal (GI) and Cystic Fibrosis Company, for $2.9 billion in cash from its shareholders, including TPG, the global private investment firm. The deal looks attractive especially keeping in mind the fact that Namenda will be facing generic competition from 2015. The acquisition will also give Forest the opportunity to build its presence in Europe and strengthen its GI and CF portfolios.

Top 5 Financial Stocks To Buy Right Now

The Merger

In February 2014, Forest was itself acquired by Actavis, a speciality pharmaceuticals company based at Parsippany, N.J., in a deal worth about $25 billion. The deal will create a powerhouse biopharma company with an extensive generics business, branded drugs and ambitious R&D operations. "The combination of Forest with Actavis creates a specialty company with annual sales of approximately $15 billion, a diversified portfolio and a geographically balanced business," said CEO of Forest, Brent Saunders. In recent days, both companies received a request for additional information from the Federal Trade Commission in connection with Actavis' pending acquisition of Forest.

Relative Valuation, Earnings and ROE

In terms of valuation, the stock sells at a trailing P/E of 116x, trading at a premium compared to the industry mean. Due to its revenue growth, Earnings per share (EPS) have increased in a good way in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. In the next graph we include the stock price because EPS often lead the stock price movement. As we can appreciate in the chart, the price performance was really good in the past year.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. The ratio has increased from the same quarter one year prior. This is a clear sign of strength within the company.

Let´s compare the current ratio with the peer group in the next table:

Forest Laboratories has a current ratio of 2.69% which is higher than the ones registered by Endo International Plc (ENDP), Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) and Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. (CBST). For investors looking for a higher ROE, Allergan Inc. (AGN) and Actelion Ltd. (ATLN.VX) are good options.

Final Comment

As outlined in this article, we think Saphris should be a good fit in Forest´s central nervous system (CNS) franchise. Additionally, Forest´s acquisition of Aptalis looks attractive, especially taking into account that Namenda will be facing generic competition from 2015. The deal will give Forest the opportunity to build its presence in Europe and strengthen its position in the gastrointestinal (GI) market in the U.S. and Canada and the cystic fibrosis (CF) market in Europe.

I would recommend investors to consider adding the stock for their long-term portfolios. Hedge fund gurus have also been active in the company in the fourth quarter of 2013. Gurus like Ray Dalio (Trades, Portfolio), Jean-Marie Eveillard (Trades, Portfolio), Paul Tudor Jones (Trades, Portfolio), Murray Stahl (Trades, Portfolio) and Dodge & Cox have taken long positions on it in that time frame.

  • [By Rahul Chattaraj]

Every year more and more people are becoming health conscious and healthcare is one such industry which I feel can never be in slump. It's is just brilliant of Apple to embed a hardware in a smartphone which will be able to cash on this opportunity. The iPhone 5S already has the hardware components to support the Healthbook app and once the iOS 8 is released for the next iPhone model and upgrades are available for the iPhone 5S, Apple will be poised to see huge surge in the demand for its devices. Certain incidents such as the top Apple executives meeting the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and former Mashimo Corp. Chief Medical Officer Michael O'Reilly joining Apple are clearly hinting that the company's mobile health dreams will very soon turn into reality.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

Despite recent anti-tobacco laws passed by the European Union and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S, the company's pricing power has helped maintain its margins. In 2012, for exa! mple, Phillip Morris hiked prices on its products in Russia, Germany, Belgium, Canada, France, Greece and Spain, among others. Although the necessary measure caused substantial volume declines in these countries, consumers rapidly became accustomed to the increased prices, and returned to their habitual product consumption. Given the success of this strategy, the firm is likely to rely on it in Japan for 2014, where taxes are expected to increase yet again by 8%, after the 40% spike in October 2010.

HTC Just Broke Google's Promise

In the face of escalating criticism over platform fragmentation, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) made a promise more than two years ago at Google I/O 2011 about Android:

So today we're announcing that a founding team of industry leaders, including many from the Open Handset Alliance, are working together to adopt guidelines for how quickly devices are updated after a new platform release, and also for how long they will continue to be updated. The founding partners are Verizon, HTC, Samsung, Sprint, Sony Ericsson, LG, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Motorola and AT&T, and we welcome others to join us. To start, we're jointly announcing that new devices from participating partners will receive the latest Android platform upgrades for 18 months after the device is first released, as long as the hardware allows ... and that's just the beginning.

The search giant was collaborating with carrier and OEM partners to ensure that new Android devices would receive software updates for at least 18 months after launch, with the disclaimer that the hardware would support it. These middlemen have always held back Android software updates, and Google wanted them to commit to improving their ways.

HTC and Samsung are among the two most prominent Android vendors right now. While HTC has fallen hard on the times at the hands of Samsung's marketing barrage, the Taiwanese company is looking to cut costs. As part of that, HTC has now backtracked on its plans to upgrade its One S to the newest version of Android, 4.2.2 Jelly Bean -- just months after promising to upgrade the device. In February, HTC said it would be upgrading a slew of devices, including the One S.

5 Best Industrial Disributor Stocks To Invest In Right Now

The One S was launched just 14 months ago, and HTC's confirmation that the device will stay on an older version of Android and HTC's Sense overlay falls short of the 18-month commitment that it made with Google. The company doesn't make any excuses about the hardware not being able to handle it, which wouldn't be believable considering how recently HTC was planning on upgrading the One S. The One S has respectable specs anyway. This is purely a cost-saving move.

The situation shows how difficult it is for Google to manage Android's fragmentation, despite its best efforts. Nexus and Google Editions aren't be plagued by these issues, as software updates will be delivered directly from Google, but when it comes to the more common subsidized Android models Google can't always keep its promise through no fault of its own.

The SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) has dropped 10.5% during the past three months, or about when all the talk about an end to the Fed’s bond buying really picked up, compared to a 2.7% return for the S&P 500.

    1. The U.S. economy grows 3% as housing starts surpass one million and private employment hits an all-time high – All time high on private employment? 1 million housing starts?

Homebuilder ETF: SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (NYSEArca: XHB) as it is tied to homebuilders and building products rather than including other sectors that only overlap in building. At $32.57, its 52-week range is 426.94 to $33.38. Housing Starts were always well over 1 million on an annualized basis each month before the recession, but they only reached that in two months of 2013 (St. Louis Fed data).

    2. 10-Year Treasury yields move toward 3.5% as the Federal Reserve completes tapering and holds short-term rate near zero – This may sound bad, but it is actually good and fits in line with rates not rising too much. Keep in mind that the 10-year Treasury is at 2.94% now and ended at 3.03% on the last day of 2013. Elsewhere on the yield curve, Doll sees many parts of the fixed income market to end 2014 with negative total rates of return.

  • [By Geoff Gannon] s that Moody's was part of Dun & Bradstreet (DNB). And D&B had a few good businesses but Moody's was a great business. And it was splitting up.

And then he goes on to talk about how he can't evaluate management at Moody's because it is such a great business that it is hard to know whether management is any good when you put someone in charge of a business like that.

He focused on the idea of pricing power. At the Buffalo Evening News he focused on the fact that they were the dominant weekday paper and they weren't doing a Sunday edition. He knew they could knock their competitor out if they went ahead with a Sunday paper. He knew how important that was to a newspaper's economics.

Doing a common sense qualitative analysis like a reporter on a news story is what can give you these insights. For example, Quan recently wrote a blog post where he casually mentions that Games Workshop a small U.K. company raises prices every June. It is an annual ritual for them. Just like at See's Candies.

If you remember my discussion of George Risk (RSKIA), one of the things I said was that I knew George Risk's materials cost was higher than some competitors' selling price. The fact that any company could survive under conditions like that immediately suggested that dollars paid for the product was not the key concern for this product.

Perceived costs had to involve other concerns like customization, shipping speed, reliability, etc. Because it was a low cost product going into a higher cost product going into very high cost projects it seemed likely there was the opportunity to raise prices if needed. And that's what they ended up doing. The important clue for me in that investigation was the severe cost disadvantage George Risk had. You couldn compete at such a cost disadvantage unless price was less important than I initially thought.

I think you will find that most of these insights are not available in the financial stateme

3 SodaStream Suitors That Make Sense

The silly buzz behind PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) buying SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) has gone mercifully flat, and that makes Oppenheimer's move yesterday -- boosting its price target on SodaStream from $68 to $85 -- all that more significant.

It's not about the takeover chatter that more often than not proves bogus. Investors should buy into a company only if they think it will eventually be worth more on its own.

SodaStream once again proved its ability to thrive as a swinging single on Monday. Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR  ) teaming up with SodaStream to jointly develop a carbonation system is a pretty big deal. It's a brand stretcher. It's validation. It's a win-win move.

However, shares of SodaStream somehow closed lower on the news. The stock closed lower yesterday, too, despite the Oppenheimer analyst move.

It's pretty clear what's happening. Speculators who hopped on expecting a PepsiCo buyout at $95 earlier this month are moving on.

It's only fair. SodaStream's shares soared 14% through the first two weeks of the month almost entirely on reports out of Israel claiming that PepsiCo had made a $2 billion buyout offer. The actual fundamentals at SodaStream never really improved at that time. Now that we're seeing legitimate catalysts in the form of an analyst's improving view and a partnership with a major appliance maker that's being offset by the selling that follows deflated buyout buzz.

PepsiCo was never going to buy SodaStream. Why would it? Why would it anger its bottlers and confuse consumers by advocating a model that would destroy its overall profitability?

No one should be surprised if someone does buy SodaStream. It just won't be PepsiCo. That rumor was insane.

Soda suitors
Who would make more sense as a potential suitor? I'm glad you asked. I'll go over three companies that would be far more realistic buyers, though naturally I'm not under the impression that any of these giants will go through with a deal.

Let's start with Whirlpool. The company behind major Maytag appliances and smaller KitchenAid appliances wouldn't be putting out a "Powered by SodaStream" home-based beverage maker if it didn't see the potential.

Whirlpool is also hungry for growth. Sales fell last year and should be flattish in 2013. Despite the housing boom that would seem to benefit Maytag appliances, growth just isn't happening. SodaStream would be too small to move the needle for a company with more than $18 billion in sales, but this could also be a way to diversify geographically.

More than half of Whirlpool's sales came from North America in its latest quarter. Add in Latin America and we're talking about more than 80% of Whirlpool's business. SodaStream is growing quickly in North and South America, but that's just 41% of its revenue. SodaStream's biggest market remains Western Europe. Buying SodaStream could be an important step in Whirlpool growing its global footprint.

Kraft Foods (NASDAQ: KRFT  ) and Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB  ) are the other two buyers that make sense. They already have working relationships with SodaStream.

Kraft kicked things off more than a year ago when it moved to team up with SodaStream to put out Crystal Light diet drinks and Country Time lemonade as carbonated flavors. The relationship was promising enough that a few months later it added Kool-Aid to the line of SodaStream beverages.

Campbell Soup has only provided its V8 Splash and V-Fusion product lines as SodaStream flavors, but Campbell is a serial acquirer. Revenue grew 15% in its latest quarter, but organic growth only clocked in 4% higher. Campbell isn't stopping. It has acquired two more companies since last month.

SodaStream would provide far more growth than Campbell and Kraft are doing organically in the low single digits, and they also have the distribution muscle to increase SodaStream's presence at the supermarket level, where the company's just starting to get its carbonated feet wet.

Will Whirlpool, Kraft, or Campbell actually buy SodaStream? They can. All three companies command market caps well north of $10 billion. However, they probably won't, and that would be the best thing for SodaStream investors.

As this week's Whirlpool deal shows, SodaStream is just starting to get busy with the fizzy.

Top 5 Regional Bank Companies To Buy For 2015

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday announced that Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB) of Cincinnati and its former CFO Daniel Poston had settled charges of "improper accounting of commercial real estate loans in the midst of the financial crisis."

Fifth Third agreed to pay a $6.5 million fine, while Poston agreed to pay $100,000 and "be suspended from practicing as an accountant on behalf of any publicly traded company or other entity regulated by the SEC."

Poston had been demoted from the CFO position and named Fifth Third's "chief strategy and administrative officer in November, when Fifth Third announced its agreement to settle the charges.

The SEC accused the bank and Poston of failing to classify a pool of nonperforming commercial real estate loans as "held-for-sale" during the third quarter of 2008, even though the bank had already decided to sell the loans.  Recategorizing the loans during the third quarter of 2008 would have included a significant write down, which would have "increased Fifth Third's pretax loss for the quarter by 132 percent."

The SEC said Poston during the third quarter of 2008 was "familiar with the company's loan sale efforts, which included entering into agreements with brokers during the third quarter of 2008 to market and sell loans."  The regulatory added that "Despite understanding the relevant accounting rules, Poston failed to direct Fifth Third to classify and value the loans as required," and that the former CFO made inaccurate statements to auditors.  Poston also made inaccurate statements to Fifth Third's auditors about the company's loan classifications, and certified the company's inaccurate results for the third quarter of 2008.

Neither Fifth Third nor Poston admitted any wrongdoing.

Fifth Third's shares were down slightly during the final hour of trading Wednesday, to $19.93.

Unfortunately, Amgen doesn't look as hot when stacked up against only other biotech stocks. The poorer showing stems in large part from incredible runs by the two companies that make up a higher percentage of the ETF's holdings than Amgen does. Both Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: REGN  ) and Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD  ) are up more than 50% so far this year.

Margins matter. The more H&E Equipment Services (Nasdaq: HEES  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong H&E Equipment Services's competitive position could be.
